Erie Street Cemetery

Across the street from Progressive Field, where the Cleveland Indians play, is Erie Street Cemetery, the oldest existing cemetery in Cleveland. The cemetery was established in 1826, and Minerva White was the first person buried there, in September 1827.

Over the years, the cemetery has had some problems with vandals and grave robbers, but the most famous headstone that was “vandalized” was not the work of criminals. Legend has it that it was done by the person buried beneath it, Chief Joc-O-Sot!

Chief Joc-O-Sot was a Sauk Indian chief who fought and was wounded in the 1832 Black Hawk War. He came to Cleveland and worked as a hunting and fishing guide and then became a member of a vaudeville troupe called the Dan Marble Theatrical Group. The group toured the United States and Europe and even met Queen Victoria in 1844.

Joc-O-Sot was very sick at the end of the European tour and tried to get back to Cleveland, but he never made it home. His body was returned to Cleveland and buried at Erie Street Cemetery.

The people who were with Joc-O-Sot when he died said he wanted to be buried with his tribe, but that didn’t happen. And apparently because of that, it is said his spirit can’t rest. The legend is that Chief Joc-O-Sot was so angry, that his spirit knocked over and smashed his original gravestone. A new headstone was put up in hopes that would appease his spirit— but it didn’t. Chief Joc-O-Sot continues to haunt the cemetery, and he’s even been seen across the street at Progressive Field.

If you happen to be in Erie Street Cemetery at night and you see a tall, dark shadow lingering near the shattered headstone of Chief Joc-O-Sot, you may want to turn around and head back the way you came!
